How to Choose a Cardigan Length

The same knit can feel quite different with a higher waistband, a longer shirt or a different pair of shoes. Choosing a length is about the line you want to create, then checking where that line will fall on you.

Start with an outfit you actually wear

Choose the trousers or skirt and the base layer you plan to wear most often. Put them on, then hold a tape measure from the top of your shoulder near the neck toward the hem you prefer. Compare that length with the garment chart. Height alone does not tell you where a hem will land; torso length and proportions matter too.

A shorter hem

A cropped cardigan can make a useful pairing with higher-rise trousers or skirts. It brings the visual line upward and can leave less fabric around the hips. Check the actual length before buying: a shorter cut may sit at the waist on one person and above it on another. Think about the base layer’s hem and whether you want it visible.

The everyday middle

A standard-length cardigan is an adaptable starting point for office shirts and familiar weekend pieces. Check that its lower buttons and hem do not pull over the area where your trousers sit. If you plan to wear it buttoned, the garment bust and hem room matter as much as the length.

A longer line

A longline cardigan adds coverage and a continuous vertical shape. Compare the chart with a longer layer you own and consider how much hem you want while seated. An open-front style creates a different line from a long cardigan buttoned through the front. For a flowing shape, leave enough room for your base layer instead of relying on stretch.

Look at the neckline and fastening together

A V-neck leaves more of a shirt or tee visible; a round neck frames a closer opening. Buttons let you vary the front line, ties create a defined point and open fronts keep the center uninterrupted. These details can change the balance even when two cardigans have the same measured length.

Make a repeatable comparison

  1. Measure a cardigan with a hem you like.
  2. Compare its length with the specific product chart.
  3. Check garment bust and any available sleeve or shoulder measurements.
  4. Review the photos for hem shape, fastening and how the front falls.

There is no single correct length. Choose the one that works with your routine and the clothes already in your wardrobe.
